“What is Functional Training?” I get asked every day. and I always respond the same way. “A training approach that emphasizes on the body’s natural movement patterns to help the body recover from the consequences of everyday lifestyle choices.” Now, allow me to clarify.

Our bodies were created to “move,” but our current lifestyle is anything but. The average person spends 17 awake hours sitting (9 hours at work, 2 hours in the automobile, 1-hour eating, and 5 hours watching TV), 6 hours sleeping, and only 1 hour moving per day. This constant sitting and lack of movement have created dysfunction in our bodies, sore lower backs, constant pain in joints, and the inability to participate in life. Our bodies have become dysfunctional as a result of our continual sitting and lack of activity, resulting in aching lower backs, persistent joint discomfort, and an inability to participate in life.

Functional Training focuses on the 7 Primal Movement Patterns of Squat, Lunge, Hinge, Twist, Push, Pull, and Gait, rather than body parts (as in traditional training). It aims to repair and improve these movements so that you can go about your daily routine without pain for many years. Functional Training is a workout regimen for everyone because each movement pattern offers a variety of exercises that may be customized to the individual’s capacity.

Functional training will not only help you gain muscle and burn fat, but it will also allow you to move more easily and without pain.
